Public invited to 15th annual MLK Unity Celebration

The 15th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Celebration will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, January 18 in Savage Arena on the UT Main Campus. The event is free and open to the public. A free community luncheon will follow the ceremony.

“It is right and fitting to take time to celebrate the life Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose words and deeds continue to inspire us to seek higher levels of civilization,” Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson said. “Let’s work together to honor his legacy by becoming a beloved community where peace, justice and compassion define us as a city.”

“On this day we celebrate an iconic champion for freedom, justice and equality, and honor Dr. King’s call to serve and make a difference in our world,” UT President Sharon L. Gaber said. “As this city’s university, UT is committed to the success of Toledo, enhancing opportunities for all, and working with the community to advance our region so that we can keep his dream of a better tomorrow within our reach.”

The 2016 MLK Unity Celebration will feature remarks by Dr. Gaber, Mayor Hicks-Hudson, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Romules Durant, with the keynote address by Pastor Cori Bush, pastor of Kingdom Embassy International who is helping lead the Ferguson movement. Performances by the Scott High School Marching Band, United Vision Baptist Choir, Toledo International Youth Orchestra and Carmen Miller Band are among the musical offerings.

The newly formed StoryCorps in Toledo project is being launched at the 2016 MLK Unity Celebration to document citizen stories about police-community relations. These will be added to the national StoryCorps project (www.storycorps.org).
