Overnight Rolling Street Closures Announced

Tuesday, May 03, 2022

The Toledo Department of Transportation, TDOT, is facilitating the transportation of ‘Cold Boxes’ from the Lucas County Port to North Star Steel. The move will require a slow, rolling closure overnight along the route. Police and TDOT vehicles will accompany the transport.

The vehicle transport cannot exceed 15MPH. As a result, traffic will be slowed and roads closed and reopened along the route as the transport moves through. Traffic will not be able to drive past the oversized vehicle.

The approved route is as follows:

Lee St. to Front St to Oak St. to Woodville Rd / Clayton St (High Level Bridge) to Summit St to Monroe St to Bancroft St to Detroit Ave to Nebraska Ave to Westwood Ave to Hill Ave to Byrne Rd to Airport HWY to City Limits at Holland Sylvania Rd.

The schedule is as follows and the times are estimated.

  • Thursday, May 5, 10 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Monday, May 9, 10 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, May 12, 10 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Monday, May 16, 10 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, May 19, 10 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The items being transported are called “Cold Boxes.” They were manufactured in China, and their purpose is to process materials and turn them into gasses both for the smelting of metals as well as produce medical grade O2, Argon, and Nitrogen. The Cold Boxes are non-hazardous. They are headed to North Star Steel west of Toledo.

The transport is being conducted in partnership with ODOT and Toledo Lucas County Port Authority.
