Minority/Women Business Enterprise (MBE/WBE)
The City of Toledo, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, has a strategic Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Women Business Enterprise (WBE) certification process to encourage those businesses owned and controlled by minorities or women to get certified.
In order to be considered for MBE/WBE status, 51% of the company needs to be owned, controlled, and managed by a minority or woman .The 51% interest must belong to one of the following ethnic groups: Latino, Hispanic, Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Alaska Native. The following documentation is utilized to determine race/ethnic background: birth certificate, U.S. passport, U.S. military records or tribal role numbers assigned by the Bureau of Indian Affairs or other official documentation that states ethnic identification.
Firms must also be in business one year prior to applying for MBE or WBE status.
Included in the application is a checklist of documentation that needs to be submitted in conjunction with the application. Upon receipt of the completed MBE or WBE application and supporting documents, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion will assess the information and determine compliance with the MBE or WBE criteria. It is critical that your application and any attached documentation provide clear and convincing evidence of MBE or WBE ownership and control of your firm.
If the business meets the MBE/WBE certification criteria, they will receive a certificate in 2 to 8 weeks, “if it’s completed”. Subsequently, the firm is added to the MBE/WBE list according to business specialty.
Companies that are certified with government entities prior to applying for MBE/WBE status with the City of Toledo may fill out the Reciprocal application to simplify the process.
