The hiring process takes approximately a full calendar year from the time the application opens to the start of the Toledo Fire and Rescue Academy.

Get an email alert when the Fire & EMS application opens.
- 18 years old by the start of the Academy
- under 40 years old by the application closing date
- High School diploma or GED
- valid driver's license by the start of the Academy
Schedule FireTEAM Test
FireTEAM is a written exam that evaluates candidates' proficiency in math, reading, mechanical, and human relations. It is proctored by National Testing Network.
FireTEAM test must be passed by November 6, 2026. If a candidate does not pass the first attempt, they must wait 3 months to test again.
Note: Candidates may attempt the test before the application opens. A passing score is valid for 1 year, but can only be submitted to HR between August 6 and November 6, 2026.
Test vouchers are not available.
Pass FireTEAM Test
Candidate must achieve to following scores to pass:
- Math - 70%
- Reading - 80%
- Mechanical - 55%
- Human Relations - 70%
National Testing Network does not deliver test scores directly to candidates. If you would like to know your test scores, wait 48 hours after completing your exam, then contact the department you sent your scores to. Once the application window is open, contact silvia.fofrich@toledo.oh.gov to request your FireTEAM test results.
Schedule Firefighter Mile Test
The Firefighter Mile is a physical ability test designed to assess your readiness for the physical demands of firefighting. The test includes 10 timed events meant to demonstrate that candidates have sufficient stamina, strength, and agility to accomplish the critical job tasks.
Note: Candidates may attempt the test before the application opens. A passing score is valid for 1 year, but can only be submitted to HR between August 6 and November 6, 2026.
Test vouchers are not available.
Pass Firefighter Mile Test
The Firefighter Mile must be passed by November 6, 2026. If a candidate does not pass the first attempt, they may take the test one more time.
Test Score Transfer
If you have already taken and passed the FireTEAM and/or Firefighter Mile tests within the past 365 days have your scores transferred to Toledo Fire and Rescue after August 6, 2026.

- Click Add Departments and choose the department jobs you would like to add
- Pay the $15 fee

Pass Background Check
The background check takes approximately 4 months. Toledo Police Department will invite candidates to an informational meeting.
Note: If your background check is rejected, there is an appeal process you may take at this stage. HR will send an email with more information about the appeal process.
Oral Interview
When candidates pass the background check, HR will schedule oral interviews.
Fire Chief Selects Final Candidates
The Fire Chief will make the final selections based on the qualified candidates after the oral interviews.
Human Resources Department Calls Final Candidates
Those who have been selected for the Academy will receive a phone call from City of Toledo Human Resources. Candidates will receive instructions for completing the rest of the hiring process before they begin the 6 months of training in the Toledo Fire and Rescue Academy.
Pass Firefighter Mile Test and Medical Exam
Selected candidates will have to pass the Firefighter Mile test one more time and a medical exam to proceed into the Academy. The candidate does not have to pay for the final Firefighter Mile test.
