Spent Lime Spill Cleaned Up

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

City of Toledo employees successfully removed inert spent lime from Otter Creek near the Collins Park Water Treatment plant yesterday.

The spent lime, which is a byproduct of the city’s water treatment process and is stored at the plant prior to being removed, spilled into the creek at 5:45 p.m. Friday when an 18-inch stormwater pipe and a 16-inch spent lime pipe were accidently broken by a contractor working on construction improvements at the plant. Between 10,000 and 20,000 gallons of material entered the creek.

The impact to the environment is minimal since the spent lime was removed. City employees chiefly conducted the cleanup so costs are expected to be minimal. The contractor is repairing the stormwater and spent lime lines.
