The summit focused on the need for a diverse range of housing options, including homes for young professionals purchasing their first homes, families looking for more space, seniors seeking to downsize, and workers considering a move to Toledo.
Expanding those options also requires making it easier for developers and investors to transform vacant and underutilized properties into homes that contribute to the vitality of Toledo’s neighborhoods.
The City is working to reduce barriers, simplify the development process, and provide practical tools to help housing projects move forward. Tax abatement programs, housing initiatives and pre-approved housing plans are among the resources available to support these efforts.
Recognizing that every neighborhood has unique needs, the City emphasized the importance of creating housing opportunities that reflect the character and priorities of Toledo’s communities. Achieving that goal will require collaboration between the City and the private sector, open conversations about development challenges and a shared commitment to turning opportunities into completed projects.
During the summit, the mayor announced the formation of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon PRO Housing Advisory Committee. The committee will bring developers, builders and industry leaders together with the mayor on a quarterly basis to review progress, identify obstacles and develop practical solutions to housing development challenges.
The committee will provide an opportunity for industry professionals with firsthand knowledge of the building process to help shape the City’s approach to expanding housing and improving the development experience.
By creating a consistent forum for collaboration, the City aims to strengthen partnerships, address challenges and identify opportunities to move more housing projects from planning to completion.
Expanding housing options is an important part of Toledo’s future. Increasing the availability of homes can help attract and retain residents, support families at every stage of life and strengthen neighborhoods throughout the city.
Toledo has the assets, partnerships and opportunities needed to make progress. Continued collaboration among the City, developers, investors and community partners will be essential to turning that potential into results.
The BuildToledo Housing Development Summit marks a step toward that shared goal: making it easier to build homes, creating stronger neighborhoods and building a stronger Toledo.
