Virtual Unity Day Celebration
The virtual celebration will stream live on Monday, January 19 at 10 a.m.
The City of Toledo and the University of Toledo, in partnership with the Human Relations Commission, are proud to announce this year's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration centered on the theme "Our Story, Our Strength."
The program features remarks from City and university leadership, artistic performances, and moments of reflection grounded in Dr. King’s words and vision.
Program highlights
- Welcome and comments from Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and University of Toledo President Dr. James Holloway
- Interview and tour of the African American Legacy Project of Northwest Ohio with Robert Smith
- “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed by Nate Hicks
- “I Have a Dream” speech recited by community members
- Keynote interview with Bishop Robert A. Culp, presented by the Human Relations Commission
- Performance by the Toledo School for the Arts Afro Caribbean Dance and Drum Ensemble
- Comments from the Chair of the Human Relations Commission
- Closing remarks and thank you from Council Member Dr. Brittany Jones

Join the NAACP Toledo Branch for a community event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This year’s theme is “The Fierce Urgency of Now: Mission Possible.” The event will feature Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, NAACP National Board Member and President of the NAACP Detroit Branch.

Living Memory Gathering™, facilitated by Malaika Bell
This one-hour, facilitated Gathering is designed to honor Dr. King's legacy by creating space for reflection, listening, and shared humanity. It is not a training, lecture, or discussion forum. Instead, it offers a guided opportunity to connect across lived experiences in a way that supports understanding, dignity, and community. No one is required to speak publicly or share personal information.
