City of Toledo Celebrates $800,000 Renovation Project with Grand Opening of Detwiler Fields

The City of Toledo celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated Detwiler Fields on Wednesday, Aug. 6 in Detwiler Park, with Mayor Kapszukiewicz throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
The event marked the completion of an $800,000 renovation project at the historic Detwiler baseball diamonds, known for their iconic four-clover layout. The celebration kicked off with remarks from Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Joe Fausnaugh, director of parks and youth services. Muddy the Mud Hen also made a special appearance.
Guests enjoyed baseball games on all four fields featuring youth and adult teams, along with family activities, free popcorn, Gatorade and commemorative baseballs.
Located just north of downtown, Detwiler Fields has long been a favorite for youth baseball. The recent improvements were designed to enhance safety, accessibility and overall playability.
The $800,000 renovation included:
Regrading and resizing of all four infields
Installation of an underdrain and tile drainage system to prevent flooding
New fencing and upgraded backstops with fence fabric
Renovations to the press box, restrooms and concession building
Improved ADA access with a new entranceway arch
Installation of bike racks to support alternative transportation
“We took our time to make sure we got it right,” Fausnaugh said. “These fields are a point of pride, and the improvements will serve our youth leagues and community for years to come.”
“These are more than just ballfields,” Kapszukiewicz said. “It’s about making significant investments in neighborhoods and giving our kids a place to grow, compete and have fun. Toledo’s future is brighter when we support our youth.”
This celebration highlights Toledo’s continued investment in youth recreation and public parks.
