As a result of the Downtown Toledo Transportation Study, we are improving connectivity and ensuring downtown Toledo has a safe, efficient, and equitable transportation network.
In 2024 the City of Toledo introduced new traffic patterns on Erie St. (from Jefferson to Cherry) and Michigan Ave. (from Jackson to Jefferson).
2024 changes included:
- a new buffered bike lane
- more on-street parking
- reduction of travel lanes (from 3 down to 2)
Impact
These temporary changes were implemented alongside a speed study and will be made permanent in 2029 with a concrete median separated bike lane. This project demonstrates how roadway design can impact driver behavior, and the speed data shows a reduction in speed since the temporary design change in 2024.

We are increasing opportunities for multi-modal transportation and improvements to pedestrian safety in alignment with our Vision Zero commitment.
- Erie and Michigan – Protected Bike Lanes and on-street parking
- Spielbusch at Jackson and Cherry – Bumpouts for pedestrian safety
- Spielbusch Cherry to Jackson – Protected Bike Lanes
- Erie and Beech – Raised Crosswalk, New Signage, High Visibility Paint
These projects connect to the existing bike network on Jefferson and the Greenbelt.
