Thank you for your interest in having a public area designated to honor a distinguished citizen of Toledo.

To request consideration, please complete the application and submit it to the Clerk of Council’s Office along with:

  • the required petition signatures

  • a $100 application fee

Once a completed application is received, the request will be considered by the Board of Honor at a meeting held within 90 days.

Eligibility and Review Criteria

The Board of Honor will review each application using the following criteria:

  • The proposed honoree’s historical and/or cultural influence in the City of Toledo

  • Proof of lineage or association with the City of Toledo

  • Public contributions made by the honoree

  • Examples of outstanding character and positive influence

  • The honoree must be deceased

  • The proposed location for renaming and why it is relevant

  • Names will not be considered if they are derogatory, pejorative, obscene, hateful, blasphemous, insulting, or otherwise offensive

Review Process

At its meeting, the Board of Honor will review the application and make a recommendation for approval or disapproval. That recommendation will then be submitted to Toledo City Council, which will make the final decision by resolution.

If an Application Is Denied

If a request is denied, a new application may be submitted one year after the denial date.

Please note that if information is later discovered that violates the criteria for designation, the Board may forward a letter of notification of revocation to Council. The City of Toledo reserves the right to remove any related signage.
