Construction of Delaware Creek Restoration Projects Complete; Media and Public Invited to Public Information Sessions

Construction for the Delaware Creek restoration project, including the installation of rain gardens with native plants, was completed recently at three locations in Delaware Park. The improvements will help alleviate erosion problems and reduce sediment, nutrient, and chemical loading from stormwater into Delaware Creek, a tributary of the Maumee River in the Lake Erie basin.

The project locations include:

• An 8,280-square-foot rain garden and bioswale at Wildwood Boulevard and Sherwood Avenue.
• A 600-square-foot innovative tiered rain garden along a highly eroded streambank on Wildwood Boulevard between Marengo Street and Beverly Drive.
• A 2,540-square-foot rain garden and bioswale at the end of Wildwood Boulevard off River Road.

The public is invited to attend information sessions at each of the three locations from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24. Attendees can view the projects and discuss rain garden details and anticipated benefits with representatives of the City of Toledo and Hull & Associates, LLC, the environmental engineering consultant for the project. Facial coverings and social distancing are required.

The project was funded by a grant from the Ohio Lake Erie Commission and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funds. Matching funds were provided by the City of Toledo’s Stormwater Utility Fund.
