Police Chief List Narrowed to Ten

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced today that the initial list of 29 candidates for the position of Chief of the Toledo Police Department has been narrowed to 10.

They are:

3. Lisa Davis, Assistant Police Chief, Cincinnati Police Department
4. Ronald Frederick, Captain, Intelligence & Special Investigation Unit, Toledo Police Department
5. Robert L. Furr, Jr., Lieutenant, Toledo Police Department
6. Bryan Hollingsworth, Captain, Internal Affairs Commander, Toledo Police Department
7. David Mueller, Deputy Chief, Investigative Services Division Commander, Toledo Police Department
8. Constance Slappey, Assistant Chief of Police, Inkster Police Department, Inkster, MI
9. David W. Taylor, Former Assistant Chief of Police, District of Columbia Housing Authority Police Department
10. Michael C. Troendle, Interim Police Chief, Toledo Police Department

Mayor Kapszukiewicz is inviting a committee of roughly 70 community leaders to participate in the interview process, which will take place over two days on March 2nd and 3rd.

Also released today was a summary of a community survey conducted December 7 - 19 to gather public input about what Toledoans want to see from their next Chief of Police and a summary of the internal department survey.

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz made the following statement regarding the process:

With the retirement of Chief George Kral, I have an important decision to make in the upcoming weeks: selecting a permanent replacement to lead the Toledo Police Department during these challenging times for policing in our country.

Last month I appointed Chief Michael Troendle to serve as the Interim Chief until a permanent Chief could be selected. Chief Troendle has done an excellent job, in my opinion, including leading the community through a very difficult officer-involved shooting on Jan 25th.

Following Chief Kral’s retirement, we received 29 applications from candidates wishing to serve as Toledo’s next Chief. I’m proud to say that the pool of applicants was excellent, a fact which reflects well on how Toledo is seen by professionals in the field of public safety.

In addition to 6 excellent internal candidates, including Chief Troendle, we received applications from places like Houston, Phoenix, Little Rock, New Jersey, the Chicago area, Detroit, and several from other cities in Ohio. I was truly impressed by the caliber and diversity of our applicants.

Working with our national search firm, Ralph Andersen and Associates, and members of my administration to review the findings of the survey we conducted of thousands of stakeholders, I have narrowed the list down to 10.

Within the next 2-3 weeks, this list will be narrowed further. I will again rely on Ralph Andersen and Associates and members of my administration to narrow this list of 10, but I will also receive input from a group of roughly 70 local community leaders — faith leaders, neighborhood leaders, business leaders, etc. — who have agreed to provide advice and input. They will offer a more personal perspective that will build upon the results found in our community survey.

I have said all along that it is my plan to have our new Chief selected by March. I still believe we are on schedule to meet that deadline. As the search enters this new phase, I look forward to continuing to talk to the residents of Toledo about what they would like to see from the person who will lead our police department into the future.
