Pontiac Preserve, formerly Penn 7, is a 59-acre wildlife habitat enhancement project funded through a National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Partnership grant awarded to the Great Lakes Commission and subcontracted to the City of Toledo.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

Penn 7 has been identified as an area of concern (AOC). It sits along a section of the Maumee River where shorelines are predominantly lined with metal walls and where floodplain wetland habitat is almost non-existent. The site was previously a confined disposal facility that accepted sediment dredged from the Maumee River shipping channel in the late 1960s-early 1970s.

Maumee AOC

This project aims to preserve and enhance the natural habitat, promote environmental sustainability, and provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. We expect construction to complete by the end of 2025.

Public Access

The full restoration of the Penn 7 site will provide walking trails for outdoor recreation and leisure.
