Arlington Sewer Collapse and Overflows Update

Monday, June 09, 2025

The City of Toledo continues active response and compliance efforts following the May 25 collapse of the Arlington Avenue sewer interceptor and subsequent sewer overflows.

Key Updates:

  • Public health advisories remain in effect for Swan Creek, Heilman Ditch, and Delaware Creek due to unsafe E. coli levels.
  • Warning signage has been placed at public access points along the creeks to remind residents to avoid contact with water.
  • As of Sunday, the water level in the Arlington interceptor at the Francis Street manhole is down25 feet, indicating strong system drainage.
  • Estimated daily bypass volume is 5 million gallons/day, managed primarily by a 12-inch high-capacity pump, with 4” and 6” pumps on standby for redundancy.
  • No active overflows are occurring at this time.
  • Water testing from Saturday shows a significant reduction in E. coli in Delaware Creek now that the overflow has stopped, but levels remain above safe thresholds.
