Pump Failure at Arlington Causes Overflows
Update 11 p.m.
A new 12-inch pump was located and is up and running on site.
Original Notice 6 p.m.
The City of Toledo is actively responding to a pump failure at the Arlington Avenue sewer collapse site that has resulted in renewed sewer overflows into Delaware Creek.
The 12-inch pump—previously maintaining adequate bypass flow around the collapsed interceptor—failed earlier today. Crews are working to locate and deploy a replacement pump as quickly as possible. In the interim, the City is operating three 6-inch bypass pumps, which are running at full capacity, but may struggle to keep pace.
As of 12:00 p.m. today, two sewer overflows have been confirmed:
- Yaryan Drive and Rohr Boulevard
- Delaware Creek Park (near 2520 Wildwood)
There are no current overflows into Swan Creek, and the City continues to monitor all high-risk locations closely.
Water quality sampling is ongoing. While E. coli levels in the creek have decreased significantly over the past two weeks, the public is reminded that health advisories remain in place for Delaware Creek, Swan Creek, and Heilman Ditch. Residents should avoid contact with creek water until further notice.
“We are actively working to restore bypass capacity and minimize any additional impact on the environment or public health,” said Doug Stephens, Director of Public Utilities. “We understand how frustrating this is for the community, and we are committed to full transparency as we work toward a long-term fix.”
