Childcare Facility Lead Service Line Replacements

Registration Opens Monday, November 3.

Strong Starts Begin with Safe Water

The City of Toledo, with the support of a $500,000 grant from H2Ohio, has launched a free program for licensed childcare facilities to remove lead service lines and replace them with copper.

Strong starts for children begin with safe water, and this program focuses on facilities where many young children spend a large portion of their day because:

  • Children under six have rapidly developing brains and are most vulnerable to lead exposure.
  • Group settings allow us to reach the largest number of children effectively

How it Works

  • The City of Toledo is cross-referencing licensed childcare addresses with our records to identify facilities with city-owned lead service lines
  • Eligible childcare providers are invited to sign up for the program
  • Once registered, we will schedule a time to replace the city-owned lead service line
  • If the customer-owned portion is identified as lead, it will also be replaced
  • Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the funding has been exhausted

Note: This program does not replace any lead pipes beyond the water meter.

Identify Pipe Material

You can perform a simple test with a penny or key and a magnet to determine the material of the water service line located on your property coming into your water meter. You only need to perform a test on the pipe if it is metal, and you are unsure what that metal might be.

A lead pipe will scratch with a penny or key, and a magnet will not stick to it.

A galvanized pipe will not scratch with a penny or a key, and a magnet will stick to it.

A copper pipe may scratch with a penny or a key, and a magnet will not stick to it.

Take a picture after you perform the test.

Please upload an image of the pipe where it meets your meter and the results of your test. Our team will review it and be in touch.
