Safe Routes to School is an Ohio Department of Transportation funded program that supports municipalities, schools with resources, technical assistance and project funding to encourage and enable students in grades K-12 to walk or ride their bike to school.

The City of Toledo uses this funding to support infrastructure projects within two miles of schools serving K-12 students.

How it Works

The City of Toledo alternates between Toledo Public and Washington Local school districts each year. The City works with the Safe Routes to School Coordinator and local schools to determine where new infrastructure should be constructed.

Safe Routes to School funding supports projects like:

  • New Sidewalks
  • Midblock Crossings
  • High Visibility Crosswalks
  • Bumpouts
  • Improved Signage
