Opening Day for the 2022 Toledo Litter League Season at Fifth Third Field
Mayor Kapszukiewicz was joined by Adam Cassi, Executive Director, Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful, Lucas County Commissioner Gary Byers, and Toledo Council Member Nick Komives to open the 2022 Toledo Litter League ‘season’ at Fifth Third Field.
Toledo Litter League is a competitive, baseball-themed, community-wide, summer-long, litter cleanup and beautification initiative. It is aimed at “striking out” litter in Toledo and Lucas County.
1,060 bags of litter were collected during the 2021 season. This is an estimated 26,000lbs of litter removed from our streets, neighborhoods, parks and rivers. In total, 32 active teams completed 115 cleanups with an estimated 2,875 volunteer hours.
“Taking care of our environment and protecting our resources starts with cleaning up litter on our streets, waterways, and in our parks,” Mayor Kapszukiewicz said.
“There is a generosity of spirit in this community where people want to give back. Toledo and Lucas County residents can do their part by joining a team and participating in this fun and competitive event.”

Litter League’s “opening day” is on Saturday, May 28th and runs through Wednesday, August 31st. The top 4 teams will be invited back to Fifth Third Field for an end of season celebration.
Each team must have a captain, team name, and a roster of no more than 20 players. Any player under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult. Teams must identify in which zip code they will be collecting litter and each player must complete a liability waiver.
All teams must register their litter cleanups with Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful in advance. Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful will provide each team with equipment that includes safety vests, gloves, litter grabbers, and trash bags. Team captains are responsible for submitting a score sheet to report statistics after each cleanup.
Teams will score one run for every full bag of litter collected. Tires and bulk items will not be included in scoring and cannot be collected during Litter League. If bulky items are found during cleanups, these should be reported on the Toledo Litter League website separately and Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful will coordinate removal.
