The Fire Investigation Unit determines the origin, cause, and circumstances of fires that are undetermined, incendiary, or suspicious in nature. The unit also investigates any fire resulting in serious injury or death, as required by the laws of the City of Toledo and the State of Ohio.
All members of the unit are trained Arson Investigators with full police powers. They receive law enforcement training through either the Toledo Police Academy or the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy, and are deputized through the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. In addition to their fire investigative duties, these officers function as sworn law enforcement personnel.
The Fire Investigation Unit also shares responsibility for:
- The permitting and safety of pyrotechnic displays
- Enforcing codes related to explosive materials and hazardous conditions
- Supporting broader fire prevention initiatives through criminal investigation
