Mayor’s Chess Tournament

Thursday, September 27, 2018

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz will host a “Mayor’s Chess Tournament” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Toledo Public Schools Educational Campus, 1609 N. Summit St., at the corner of Summit and Bush. The tournament will be held in the former YMCA gymnasium. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m.

“Chess players of all ages and skills will play chess during this tournament,” Mayor Kapszukiewicz said. “Playing chess not only promotes critical and creative thinking, it’s also a lot of fun. We are happy to be a part of this event and I want to thank Warren Woodberry, the Toledo Scholastic Chess Club, Toledo Public Schools, and the generous sponsors who are making it possible.”

Mr. Woodberry, chess director at Jones Leadership Academy of Business, suggested Mayor Kapszukiewicz host the tournament.

“Mayors across the country hold chess tournaments for their communities to encourage children and adults to play the game, which is a great skill and promotes critical thinking and planning,” Mr. Woodberry said. “The event is open to all adults, children, city officials, companies, regional neighbors, and four top students from Toledo area schools, grades K-12. The event is a fundraiser to support Toledo Scholastic Chess. Additional support for the scholastic chess program is welcomed.”

The site was selected by Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Romules Durant.

The fee to play in the tournament is $20 for adults 19 and older. It is free for scholastic players in kindergarten through 12th grade.

There will be trophies and medals for scholastic players in kindergarten through 12th grade. There will be cash prizes for adults, 19 and over, and for students who are rated and members of the United States Chess Federation. Mr. Woodberry said.

Adults who are not members of the United States Chess Federation will receive trophies and medals in the non-rated category, he said.

Pre-registration checks can be mailed to Toledo Public Schools Foundation, 1609 N. Summit Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604, attention Mayor’s Chess Tournament. Payment can also be made at the door on the day of the event. To register to play, or more information, contact Mr. Woodberry at htccwarren@yahoo.com.

Mayor Kapszukiewicz will open the tournament in the morning and play a round of chess. He will also award trophies at the conclusion. Members of Toledo City Council will also be present.
