After-Hours Establishments Announcement

The after-hours establishment at 5205 Telegraph Rd. has been padlocked and boarded-up following a recent deadly shooting at that location, and other such illegal operations will be under extreme scrutiny, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, District 6 Councilmember Theresa Morris, and other city officials announced during a news conference today.

“We are cracking down on after-hour establishments,” Mayor Kapszukiewicz said. “These are totally off-the-books. They don’t have permits. They have not been inspected. They are illegal and unlawful in every way. We are doing everything we can to make sure places like this do not exist.”

“There have been a handful of these establishments that our team has done the same thing that we have done here at 5205 Telegraph: we got a court order and we boarded them up,” the mayor said. “We already know there are about half-a-dozen other after-hour establishments that we are watching.”

The mayor said the full weight of the city’s operations would be used to monitor and close these illegal operations.

“We are prepared to take away your property,” he said. “We know who you are and we know where you are.”

Mayor Kapszukiewicz advised residents not to go to such illegal establishments and he asked residents to report such places.

“They had no occupancy permit, no liquor permit, and had performed construction without permits,” Councilmember Morris said of 5205 Telegraph. “The building was ordered to shut down … the operator continued to operate without any regard for city or state laws…. We know these clubs only breed illegal activity.”

Toledo Police Chief George Kral said the illegal businesses operate inconsistently and in various locations, making them difficult to investigate.

“These are dangerous havens for guns and violence, but also safety concerns like a fire,” Chief Kral said.

The mayor highlighted six other locations the city is monitoring: 930 Hamilton St., 3325 Elm St., 613 Magnolia St., 3413 Monroe St., 5742 Telegraph Rd., and 1034 W. Sylvania Ave.

“Some of these are in neighborhoods, with homes all around them, and we will not tolerate this,” Mayor Kapszukiewicz said.
