Mayor Kapszukiewicz Announces 18 Vibrancy Initiative Projects Expected to Spur $21.6 Million in Investment
Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Department of Economic Development Director Brandon Sehlhorst today announced the selection of 18 Vibrancy Initiative projects expected to spur $21.6 million in investment across the city. Thanks to Toledo City Council, the programs received $835,000 in funding in 2024. The Department received a total of 76 applications across the four programs and will selected 18 projects for funding.
“These 18 projects represent a major step forward in revitalizing Toledo's neighborhoods," said Mayor Kapszukiewicz. "By investing in our local businesses and infrastructure, we are not only enhancing the quality of life for our residents but also paving the way for sustained economic growth."
Launched in 2021, the Vibrancy Initiative is a robust economic development tool aimed at enhancing Toledo’s vitality through strategic investments in catalytic revitalization projects. These projects focus on job creation, blight reduction, and preservation and improvement of older structures. The initiative includes the Façade Improvement Grant and White Box Grant programs. To date, the initiative has invested in 62 projects, leveraging over $80 million of private sector investment. These investments have assisted 18 existing businesses in retaining 336 jobs and attracted 21 new businesses, creating 145 jobs.
The Department of Economic Development introduced two new pilot programs this year aimed at building a pipeline for future façade and white box grant applications within the designated Old South End and Englewood Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Areas (NRSAs). The Façade and White Box Planning Grant programs will provide funding for assessments, design, and engineering services necessary for a construction project.
"We are thrilled about the potential of the pilot planning grant programs," said Director Sehlhorst. "As we continue our work in the NRSAs, we recognize the importance of innovative partnerships to enhance vibrancy. We believe these planning grant programs will be a valuable resource for driving progress in these areas."
