Water Tap Installation

New water taps are for new private connections to a public water source.

All new water taps must begin with a permit application. You can apply for a permit, submit plans, and pay in our online permit application portal. If you need help navigating the portal, you can get detailed information here.

The information below will help you navigate the water tap installation process.

Residential Properties, or if the new line or modification is 2 inches or smaller

  1. Apply for Water New Tap/Modification permit and pay fee
  2. Begin construction.
    1. Important notes:
      1. install service branch 1 ft. beyond the property line and stubbed 1 ft. above ground level.
      2. inlet side of meter must have a locking ball valve, bushing, and tailpiece
      3. outlet side of meter must be plumbed
      4. service address must be visible from the street
  3. Schedule inspection. Call Tap Desk at 419-245-1825.
  4. Water Department installs tap.
  5. Establish a water account and request meter installation. Call Public Utilities Customer Service at 419-245-1800.

Commercial and multi-unit residential properties, or if the new line or modification is larger than 2 inches

  1. Apply for (New or Addition) Commercial Building permit
  2. Prepare site plans for review
    1. Water Sewer Tap Plan Review Requirement
  3. Submit site plans for review
    1. Water Engineer and Fire Department review Water Site Utility plan
      1. If the requirements are not met, the engineer will request changes and applicant will submit updated plan until approved.
  4. Pay water fees.
  5. Schedule a tap inspection. Call construction technician at 419-936-2681.
  6. Begin construction.
  7. Water Department installs tap.
  8. Schedule meter setting inspection. Call Tap Desk at 419-245-1825.
  9. Establish a water account and request meter installation. Call Public Utilities Customer Service at 419-245-1800.

Note: All commercial, irrigation, and domestic meters with a lawn irrigation system downstream must have a containment-type backflow device (RPZ) installed at the meter. You must schedule and pass a Meter Setting Inspection before calling to request a meter installation.
