Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Begins Construction on Multisport Youth Athletic Field

Friday, July 12, 2019

On Monday, July 15, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation will break ground on a new youth development park located in the Old South End neighborhood. Together, in partnership with the City of Toledo, Rick and Nancy Corbett Field will serve as the central location for the YMCA of Greater Toledo and The Believe Center programs.

The 75,000 square-foot multisport synthetic turf playing field will be lined for youth baseball/softball, football and soccer and complete with a digital scoreboard, backstop, dugouts and fencing. Upon completion, the YMCA will manage and maintain the field and work closely with the Ripken Foundation and other partners to create programs to engage at-risk young people. The programs will address a variety of youth development needs, which include character development, health and physical education, and culture and history.

“Cal Ripken is one of the most iconic names in the history of baseball, so any program that has his name on it will be excellent,” Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said. “We are committed to providing more and better recreational opportunities for Toledo, and being able to do that while also helping to revitalize one of our historic neighborhoods, is truly a grand slam.”
