Friday, November 12, 2021

The City of Toledo is submitting a grant application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for a $500,000 Brownfield Community Wide Assessment grant. Brownfields are vacant, abandoned, or underutilized properties that have real or perceived environmental complication.

If awarded, this grant will be utilized to update the local brownfield inventory, assess sites with hazardous substances and petroleum contamination, prepare risk assessments, and develop reuse plans at sites within two target areas within the City of Toledo. Sites outside the target area are also eligible for funding.

The application is due December 1, 2021 and awards will likely be announced in May 2022. The City has received 23 U.S. EPA brownfield grants worth $8.955 million since 1997, including three previous assessments grants. A draft of the application will be available for public comment and review on November 12, 2021 and comments must be submitted by November 19, 2021.
