An Unparalleled Experience
The total solar eclipse happening on April 8, 2024, is a momentous event. An estimated 139,000 – 556,000 people are expected to travel to Ohio to see the eclipse and over 7,000,000 people live in the path of totality.
Toledo is in that path and will see almost two minutes of totality. Here’s what to expect on the big day:
1:56 pm – Partial Eclipse begins
A partial eclipse will begin in which the moon starts to cover the sun.
As the moon begins to move over the sun, you’ll start to see a crescent shape of the sun appear.
Remember: It’s unsafe to look at the eclipse without certified eclipse glasses on
3:12 pm – Totality begins
The moment we’ve all been waiting for! The moon will finally begin to cover all of the sun.
As the moon gets closer, you’ll see Baily’s Beads around the moon. Baily’s Beads are small pockets of light you’ll see on the outer sphere of the moon as the moon begins to fully cover the sun. The effect happens because the Moon’s surface is uneven and full of mountains, valleys and craters.
Finally, there will be no more light. The moon will fully eclipse the sun and turn day into night within seconds.
At this time, you can take your eclipse glasses off and marvel at the world around you.
3:14 pm – Totality ends
Totality ends when the faintest hints of the sun can be seen on the edges again.
The partial eclipse will now begin again as the moon moves off the sun.
Remember: Eclipse glasses need to be put on once totality ends
5:27 pm – Partial Eclipse ends
Once the partial eclipse ends, the sun will be fully visible again.
Note: The times in this piece are based on Imagination Station’s location in downtown Toledo. Depending on where you choose to view the eclipse, these times will differ. In cities south of Toledo, totality will last up to 3 minutes or longer.
